The Scottish Hospital - view from outside
The hospital building was erected in the 19th century by Dr. David Watt Torrance - a Scottish surgeon, who saw healing through medicine and treating the sick in the Holy Land as his calling.

The first hospital in Tiberias was built in January 1894 by Dr. Torrance who managed the hospital, and also travelled around the region treating its inhabitants including the residents of Safed where the hospital was located in the summer months.

In 1921, his son, Dr. Herbert Torrance, joined his father and worked at the hospital until his retirement in 1953. The mayor of Tiberias at the time honoured him with the award of a gold pin badge as a gesture of profound gratitude from the city. The hospital continued operating as a maternity hospital until 1959, and was later converted into a guest house.

In 1999, the Church of Scotland decided to open a unique hotel which would serve as a centre of culture and tranquillity for its guests, as a site of faith, peace and prosperity, and a place to continue Torrance’s vision of healing and commitment to the local community. The Hotel works towards the Church’s goals of healing relationships through education, ministry and hospitality.

The luxurious Scots Hotel was established by the Church of Scotland in 2004 in the historical compound of the Scottish Hospital, and uniquely combines the 19th century basalt buildings with a modern and up-to-date hotel of international standards. When planning the hotel, great emphasis was placed on conserving the character of the compound by producing a synergy between new and old and creating an atmosphere of serenity and mystery. The interior decoration combines the historical character of the buildings with the comfort required from a 5-star hotel. The hotel's staff consist of professionals from all religions, who know how to provide the best service for those special moments.
An atmosphere of serenity, quiet and tranquillity; combined with history and mystery; as well as service of the highest level - turn any vacation at the Scots Hotel into a perfect experience, unique and exceptional, surpassing anything you have ever known.
